A-Level Results 2010: Interview with Tan Yee Hui, 2009 maniAC Editor

Yee Hui on Honours Night 2009, lurking behind a certificate

We caught our senior smiling along the hall walkway and decided to corner her before anyone else got to her and took her away. From her responses we initially inferred her results were lacklustre, but this interviewer caught a glimpse of her results slip and saw the immense number of As on it. From that, we knew this was not a senior to be trifled with…well, not academically, at least.

M: Any weird studying habits that somehow work?

Y: No. I don’t really have a programme. As in, study when the exam comes. Listen in class I guess. Listening in class really helps.

M: Any really bizarre dreams in the days leading up to getting your results?

Y:  Oh gosh, yeah! I dreamt that I was pregnant! Like, the A Levels have got nothing to do with it, it’s just weird.

M: What were your thoughts when you received your results slip?

Y: [points to result slip] When I saw this ah? I don’t know. I wasn’t really thinking…no, cos I knew it wasn’t going to be very good so I was like “Oh…ah…” I was quite surprised about some stuff though.

M: Anything interesting you’ve been working on?

Y: Yeah I work. I mean, of course I work. Oh! I can talk about Bare Your Sole right. Cos I’m working for Habitat for Humanity, it’s a Christian international NGO….so in June we’re having a barefoot walk for charity, so get everyone to sign up for that…NOW! Now! Now!

M: Anybody you would like to thank?

Y: I would not like to thank myself for my crappy handwriting which might have cost me my History and Econs. Uh…I guess all the teachers…All my friends in the class also. I don’t know…see, we have fun in class even if the grades aren’t that good, but we learn a lot so…

M: Any song playing through your head now?

Y: Right now? Right now? Uh…No! Uh wait…I have an ACJC playlist but I don’t have a theme song…

M: Any brain food you ate?

Y: No brain, so no food.

M: Which subject were you most worried about?

Y: H3 Lit…I thought Econs maybe…but I wasn’t expecting anything so I wasn’t dreading it either. I thought History would be okay, but it wasn’t. Better than expected actually cos I thought I’d fail…
