A-Level Results 2010: My Dilemma of the Day
By Mayomi

Many of my friends have just received their A level results or their A level Mother Tongue results today and despite the fact that the school had done very well in both aspects there will always be people who aren’t all that satisfied with the results they have received. As a friend, I really want to know if they are alright especially after receiving such important news, but i don’t want to come across as insensitive if they haven’t done as well as they had expected to. As it is, i never ask my friends how they fared, i always ask them if they are okay. But I feel that this is sometimes interpreted as prying for their results.
I have yet to come up with a good solution to this. Not asking comes across as not caring and asking will be interpreted as being nosy. There is hardly anything more a girl can do especially if she, like me, has a knack for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.
Fortunately, some of my friends have indeed done well and are more than happy to share their results with me and sometimes share their joy with everyone. This too, is sometimes interpreted as insensitive to those around them who may not be as happy. And yet, it is hardly fair to ask them to mellow down when their good news is indeed deserved and good cause for celebration.
It is a thin line that the friend walks, and a slip in either direction can be disastrous. This is why I dreaded this day, even when I myself have no results to collect. I have been walking on eggshells all afternoon and have no idea how to act, or what to say. So, whether you spend the weekend celebrating like there is no tomorrow (or terms for that matter) or wallowing in self pity, spare a thought for your friend. She too is doing the best she can.
