Funorama reflections

By Weiss

Fun-o-Rama, for me, will forever be associated with onion rings. It was a massive day of firsts for me – for once, I was actually entrusted – well, to be completely frank, my classmates didn’t have much choice – to cook. It was simultaneously terrifying and, for lack of a better word, fun. I’m gifted with the uncanny knack of burning water, so it wasn’t long before my blunders and inexperience made their appearance. Within the space of several minutes, I had managed to scald myself, break the rings and turn them an ominous rust-black, though (mercifully) not all at the same time.

Fun-O-Rama XX: The ties that bind

By Mayomi.

Finally it has come.

Funorama XX.

All the hard work we’ve put in for the past couple of months has now paid off. I’m sure that we enjoyed ourselves last Saturday, and that even though we technically overpaid for everything we bought twice over, the laughs we had, the experience and all the memories that we will always keep with us… could possibly be worth it.

Everyone had come, packed themselves into the college to have fun for a good cause. But for me, the most important part of Fun-O-Rama was the time spent with my classmates. Previously, I had written that now with the pressures that come with a J2 lifestyle, we can hardly find the time to just hang out and spend time with one another. Fun-O-Rama was, hence, the perfect excuse for me to spend a lot of much needed quality time with them. I realised that my class was much more bonded that i had previously thought it was – Fun-O-Rama has tested our teamwork, and this, I’ve found, is a very strong attribute that my class has.

Fun-O-Rama XX: The search

By Mayomi

Fun-O-Rama.

This suggests that everyone is having fun right?

So, naturally, I went around looking for people that were not having fun.

Nope, not them…

… or them…

… my juniors are having fun…

Fun-O-Rama XX: Some strange sights

Before we get hold of the really nice photos taken by the Photographic Society, here are some that are…not so nice. Actually, they’re pretty useless.

Several contemplative young men gazing into the middle distance, and a chicken in a very awkward position.

More objectification of those hapless birds. Fun-O-Rama really isn’t a good time to be a chicken.

Boy on the right: “AARRRGGGH! THERE’S AN EVIL PANDA TRYING TO TAKE A BITE OUT OF HIS SHOULDER!!”

Girl with megaphone: “Ladies, if you look to the right, you’ll see the latest in trendy headgear.”

“Mrs Tan, our beautician is ready to see you now…..Mrs Tan?…..Mrs Tan??!!”

Kawaii, ne?

“Hey! I’ve got cute Japanese accoutrements too. How come nobody says I am kawaii?” (Maybe because you’re a bit too tall?)

The Feeture: The Ferragamo Edition

By Cider

What would your reaction be if you received a pair of Salvatore Ferragamo shoes? Would you squeal in delight? Or would you scowl and curse the person for wasting money?

Do you own a pair of Ferragamo shoes? I, for one, certainly do not. It is simply because I do not feel the need to and do not have the means to acquire one.

Under Pressure

By Mayomi

Horror of horrors. We J2s are in the midst of receiving the results of our Term exams. From what I’ve heard from my friends and classmates, things have been disappointing for us generally. And although some take comfort in the idea that our grades will be moderated or that the paper was generally tougher that expected, I’ve never been able to look at my own results that way.

As you can tell, I’m a glass-half-empty kind of girl.

Facing our fears- a new column

By 红蝴蝶

In case you’re wondering, I am not a new writer who just joined this awesome blogging CCA called maniAC. I am actually a veteran writer who had a mid-life (or rather, mid-JC) crisis and decided to start a new column. It is really easy guessing my identity as my writing style will give me away sooner or later, and those familiar with my old posts’ content would be able to pick up on the clues I drop in this post.

Life as a part of exam papers

By Mae

It’s a ridiculously hot world. The people around me do not seem to have grasped the concept of personal space, infringing on mine in the warmest possible way. I feel thin and flimsy, and am crushed on both sides by other Flimsies, but I don’t crinkle because we are all so hot it is impossible to.

Let’s Compromise

By Olga

Last week when dance practice ended, my friends and I were making our way to the bus stop. Nobody noticed how the sky was a dark shade of lilac and how the leaves of the trees were black, and a kind of printed pattern formed with them against the sky. Later, when I looked back to the sky, the colour changed from lilac to a burning apricot shade, as if someone threw a lighted match and the sky caught fire. Few people cared; only my friend and I stood gaping at the sky in awe.

Funorama Banner Painting

Since this is my first post, I suppose some introductions are in order. I am currently in J1. I do not like waking up early on holiday mornings, and am still trying to fall into step with the rigours of JC life. I am also utterly and completely disgruntled at having to come to school on four out of five days during a supposed holiday.

Term 1 Reflections

By Christy

It is the first Saturday of the March holidays, and having this long-awaited break made me start reflecting on my past term. What have I done, and what have I learnt from them? Is there anything I should have done, and is there anything I did but could have done better? Doing this reality check threw up some surprising victories and regrets; many joys but just as many sorrows. I guess that’s part of teenage life- our emotions swing up and down in a pattern not unlike the scariest roller coaster we have ever sat on. Being young, fresh and raring to go, we bluster through our adolescence in a whirl of lectures, tutorials, trainings, camps, class outings, birthday parties and what-have-you, in the hope of achieving satisfaction and feeling wanted and appreciated by the community. However, after we stop, panting for breath and collapsing from exhaustion after trying so hard, what have we really gained? What did we do all that for to begin with?

Pop Box: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

By DT

What makes a game great? Is it the memory of the moments where your jaw drops into your lap? (maniAC is not responsible for any facial dislocations) Is it a plot that leaves you regretting that you finally beat that last boss? Is it the choices that you’re allowed to make that shapes your character in ways that makes the game come alive? Perhaps it’s all of that…and maybe more. Continue Reading…

A-Level Results 2010: a maniAC special

by Obsession

Photos by the Photographic Society

Today was a particularly exciting day for us here at ACJC with our seniors receiving their long awaited A-level results. Throngs of our seniors came by in their casual wear, but despite their deceptively casual appearance, all could see the anxiety and worry etched on most of their faces. A worry shared, in small part, by the J2s that were also receiving their Mother Tongue results.

I could feel the tension filling the hall as all eyes and ears focused on our principal Mrs Kelvyna Chan, when she spoke about the schools’ achievements in the examinations. Due to the hard work and determination of our J3 batch, ACJC has once again done exceedingly well – a relief for all students and teachers. Especially noteworthy are the two students that have scored 8As in their subjects – Ellie Choi (2SC6) and Dawn Chen (2AA2) topping the science and arts combinations respectively, with Ellie taking the title of Top ACJC Student. There were 190 students that received 3As and above, with the majority of them receiving 5 to 7 distinctions. As the names of these high achieving students were called out one by one, the crowd in the hall slowly thinned out as many of them made their way onto an already packed stage.
