Mrs K : Can you name any other calamities BESIDES the 2004 Asian Tsunami?
L. Vu : 2009 Prelims!
On 11 September, a group of ACJC students (made up of 3 maniAC members and 4 from Editorial Board), visited Reuters, the prestigious (and certainly the most renowned) news/information vendor. The security at Reuters is really high as we were all issued personalised visitors passes. We had a guide, Darren but he is no ordinary person. He has lots of field experience, was a bureau chief before and is/has been in charge of grooming budding talents.

Last Wednesday, the ACJC Harp Ensemble had its last CCA meeting of the year before the JC1 promotional exams. While most CCAs had already stopped, we had one more meeting, as we needed to catch up on lessons.

Mrs K : Can anyone give me examples of celebrity activism that isn’t genuine?
B. Kwan : If anybody says Angeline Jolie I’m going to shout.
P. Chuan : … ANGELINA JOLIE!!!
B. Kwan [incensed without lifting her head from on the table] : NOaaaarrrgh!!!!!!!!

Today. this writer was tasked to attend the 1st Young Whizzes Challenge organised by our very own ACJC Science and Math Council (SMC). Apparently we were hosting the final round in one of our lecture theatres and I expected to witness some serious brain juice by the contestants. Curious to see what kind of questions they had set for the Einsteins of tomorrow, I decided to go early and watch the rehearsal for the competition. The first question stumped me. The second question befuddled me. And the third question, to say the least, left me completely flabbergasted. The questions were so hard I was unable to answer any one of them (or maybe it’s because I haven’t been revising for math). I was utterly convinced of the final score the four teams were going to have: zero-zero-zero-zero. Hey, this junior college student is unable to answer the question , what can little kids 5 years younger than me do? Or so I thought.

It’s been a while since my last television related post, so I guess it’s time I returned to my specialty subject. This is especially so since the new fall season has started.

In 1967, Yoko Ono made the following comments:
My ultimate goal in film-making is to make a film which includes a smiling face snap of every single human being in the world. Of course, I cannot go around the whole world and take the shots myself. I need cooperation from something like the post offices of the world. If anybody would drop a snapshot of themselves and their families to the post office of their town, or allow themselves to be photographed by the nearest photographic studio, this would be soon accomplished.

Victims of food thieves? Canteen loan sharks? Demoralised vegetarians? Answers, anybody?

It was approaching 5 pm. I was taking in the warm cosy atmosphere of the Ikea restaurant when my eyes happened to rest on the sight of a man looking to be devouring his food. This man sat alone, at a table near the window where the glorious sunlight streamed in. He seemed rather hungry. He chewed fiercely, and something seemed to be on his mind. He gazed out of the window while keeping the jaw muscles working. His eyebrows weren’t furrowed; he didn’t seem quite angry. What could he possibly be mulling over?

Holidays are in! That’s right, our annual September one-week holidays are here! While schools in seasonal ountries are beginning their new semesters, schools in Singapore are closed, in the sense that we no longerhave to follow our timetables or reach home at 7pm after a long day of lessons and CCA.
Some might reply “what holiday???” when asked what their plans for the holidays are. However unhappy we are with the amount of homework we have to complete within this week, we cannot deny that we are secretly happy and relieved that we no longer need to wake up at 615 on weekdays, 645 on Tuesday.

There have been so many recent posts regarding teachers day this week, because, teacher’s day is truly the most exciting thing that happened last week. Unlike most other schools, Teachers’ Day in AC was celebrated on Friday instead of Monday due to the J2 prelims. But it didn’t matter which day we celebrated the event, the atmosphere of the college last week was particularly festive especially as we took the time to wish some of our teachers “A Very Happy Teachers’ Day “when we saw them during our tutorials.
