Time. A concept we battle with everyday.
Why is this 40 minute chemistry lesson not ending? Time needs to pass faster!
Tomorrow’s the exam?! But I haven’t studied! Where did all the time go?
Time never seems to pass at the correct pace, yet it always passes at the exact same pace.

The first I heard of this competition incidentally was in school. For once, there was an ad I was actually interested in.

Since most of you have probably COMPLETELY forgotten about it, I’ll give you some background info.
Aimed at promoting environmentalism, the competition calls for anyone and everyone to express their love for the environment through music. The top ten finalists get to undergo a special mentorship programme with Clement Chow, a veteran singer-songwriter. To quote the competition website directly, “The winning song will even be selected as the official Clean & Green Singapore song for 2010!”

After a long hiatus, The Surreal Staffroom returns with yet more evidence that there are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy:
In which a teacher discovers the key to a balanced diet.
All right, that’s just Mr Sanjay Mathew carrying the Literature Department’s Healthy Breakfast to the staff pantry, and very sportingly posing for a photo. (Several photos, actually — another teacher is madly snapping away on the left.) Thanks for letting us post this, Mr Mathew!

It’s one of those buses that take forever to arrive and as you wait for it you wonder why. It’s also the kind of bus that gives you a workout (or a very bad moment of wheezing) as you run after it.
It’s the bus that most dorm-livers (oh look I just created a word!) live for. It’s the kind of bus that tests your limits. How fast can you run? How much do you want to be early for school? How much do you want to go home?
How much are you willing to work to get it?
Can 48 become a metaphor?

In light of E-Learning (19-20 Aug) for us J1s, I think it’d be quite appropriate for me to share my thoughts and views on it.
So here goes:
E-Learning. One look at it and people of the 21st century would understand its meaning. This is because our society now has progressed so rapidly, to keep pace with the shifting needs and demands of globalization, that we find ourselves constantly being bombarded with new terminologies, struggling to learn their meanings, keeping up with the latest trends and gadgets, and so on. All in a bid to stay afloat and prevent ourselves from lagging behind in the rat race. E-Learning simply means electronic-learning, or learning using the internet.

I attended the Jay Chou concert on 24th July. It is probably one of the greatest experiences of my entire life.
Now, before anyone grimaces (there seem to be a lot of people who do not recognise his obvious, glaring genius) and turns away, thinking me mad and unfit to be listened to, let me first enlighten everyone by telling his story. He actually has one, and it isn’t half bad.
Few people actually know this, and yes, this is in fact a true rags-to-riches story.
Jay Chou grew up in a poor family. His mother was an Art teacher and his father taught Physics. Chou did not do well in his studies so his mother found him a job in a restaurant. As a child, the only thing that Chou seemed to be good at was music. Noticing this, his mother used up all of her savings to buy him a piano. His learning music angered Chou’s father and the family ties began to weaken and strains started to appear in their family relationships. Chou’s parents eventually filed for divorce, with his mother taking care of Chou. Chou was once quoted as saying, “I will do anything for my mother’s happiness!” He was eventually discovered by Jacky Wu, a famous television show host, singer and actor, who then invited Chou to work in his company.

WARNING: SOME PEOPLE MAY CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING CONTENT TO BE DISGUSTING
One of the most common peeves of ACJC students nowadays is the loss of an item. It usually occurs when one is a) too spaced out; b) on an adrenaline high; c) really unlucky. But I am here today to tell you that there is hope. For through my personal strife, I have found the secret formula to the repossession of your various belongings.
1. Lose your item
Just the other day, I was with my classmates in the void deck. “Rumble rumble rumble,” I heard my stomach say. In response, I removed my retainers, wrapped them in tissue, and took a big bite out of my peanut butter waffle. Soon, the school bell signalled that it was time for Math. Which also meant that it was time for the test on Binomial Theorem. I scooped up all my stuff and dashed for class. Now fast forward to 1 hour later. My brain was fried, and I was shuffling around like one of those easy-kill Left For Dead zombies. Then my friend asked me, “Annie, do you want some of my bubble tea?” This was my train of thought from that moment on:
Bubble Tea > Contains pearls > Pearls are chewy > It is difficult to chew with my retainers on > My retainers > Where are my retainers?!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt begins to suspect that the train will never come.
Inception, in case you haven’t heard or dreamt about it yet, is a movie about a man who can enter anyone’s mind via dreams to either steal their secrets or plant an idea, which he does in order for him to be able to see his kids. Sounds all right so far? Well, do read on.
1. You have to really, really focus to understand the movie.
I don’t know about you but when I watch movies, I do so to get entertained. Movies like Despicable Me belong to this category. If I wanted to get my brain all confused and overloaded with information, I attend economics lectures. And if I wanted to make myself grossed out I can watch Twilight or watch Liverpool play, or simply listen to Justin Bieber songs. But I digress. The point I’m making here is that the level of concentration I was at while watching Inception was roughly the level of concentration I am at during economics lectures, which makes me really sore because I feel like I paid for an economics lecture.
2. For the following few nights, you can’t sleep.
That’s what happened to me. I just lay in bed. And I simply couldn’t get to sleep. Because I just kept thinking of the quote:
‘You’re waiting for a train, a train that will take you far away. You know where you hope this train will take you, but you don’t know for sure. But it doesn’t matter because…’
I fell asleep at this point.

Inception is the kind of ingenious, intellectually-challenging films that Hollywood only seems to make every once in a few years. It will leave you scratching your head, thinking, debating and discussing long after the film’s over. Christopher Nolan, the brains behind The Prestige and The Dark Knight, has put together what some people call his masterpiece; whatever it was that planted the idea for Inception into Nolan’s head, has created a great film – arguably the best of the year.
