A Division Hockey Finals

By Soapy

The A Division Hockey Finals was held on 9th April, last Friday. For me and my teammates, this was a very significant day as it was the first time in 11 years that AC Hockey girls had gotten into the finals. We started out the morning by having a very long team talk, which managed to get everyone hyped up and all set for  the match. The turnout for the match was amazing – so many supporters came down for the match. One side of the stands was filled with supporters wearing red, blue, gold and white (ACJC colours) while the other side of the stands were filled with supporters wearing beige and yellow (VJC colours).

The Hockey Finals 2010

By Dee

Friday, 9th April 2010:
The weather looked gloomy, and I peeked out from shelter and up into the sky: strangely, a big fat grey cloud seemed to be hovering only over our school compound. In no time, drizzles dropped and the rain came pouring down. Before panic set in, I quickly texted a friend who was already at the Delta sports complex and was relieved it wasn’t raining there. Yet. I was earnestly hoping the sky would hold up for this crucial match to be played.

Following light rain, the match started about half an hour after the scheduled time. The hockey players stood proud and valiantly on the pitch, as their names were announced one by one as the huge turn-up of spectators cheered enthusiastically. A sense of pride in me swelled as I looked upon these hockey players. Continue Reading…

Cross-Country 2010: a maniAC special

Students with long memories may remember my last post on this subject, in which I dubbed the 2009 race The Deluge. Well, Cross-Country 2010 was pretty perfect. Give me hot weather over water-logged graphic calculators any day. Anyway, here is the maniAC Cross-Country 2010 Special, which focuses on Runners, Manpower and Other Strange Sights.

Cross-Country 2010: Runners

One minute they are being menaced by small children on bikes…

…standing there like a herd of polite sheep:

Next thing you know, they are off like a pack of V-sign-flashing greyhounds:

Cross-Country 2010: Manpower

You think running in the hot sun is difficult? Try standing under the hot sun for hours in a fluorescent yellow polyester vest:

Another indispensable bunch (carrying a stretcher that looked rather enticing to some misguided people):

AC Games 2009 – AC Current (A very late post!)

by Michelle Marie Josephine Chern 1AA5

Possibly the most enthusiastic class at AC Games 2009, 1AA5 showed up with painted arms and faces, ready to let loose after their stressful weeks of Promotional Examinations. They made it all the way to the soccer semi-finals, losing by sudden death elimination to 1SC7 who was overall champion for soccer,  after beating 1SB7 in the Soccer Finals. AC Games was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all of us, for we could only experience the joy and fun of the competitions in our JC1 year. As the hours flew by on both days, the crowded bleachers became sparser as classes that lost went home by the hour. We would like to thank the 34th Students’ Council for putting in so much effort in planning and organising the whole event. Here are some images from the event.

What they were playing for.

Forfeiting Football

The Twelfth Man

If I ever needed further reminders that the holidays are quickly ending and that the real crazy work is going to crash in, I got one when I woke up a few days ago. Despite verbally agreeing to it in the past, I nevertheless still received a rude shock when I discovered, much to my horror, that I couldn’t watch the replay of the Euro U-21 match. My sports channels had all been totally cut off; my weekly fix of watching football is over. And that means I’m going to miss the first half of the upcoming football season.

Shoot For The Stars: Shooting Camp 2009

by Christy

Over the weekend, this writer took a break from shooting down the opposite gender for the various shortcomings they have and instead had a 3-day intensive camp ‘with’ shooting targets. Yes, this writer is talking about none other than Shooting Camp 2009, and did I have a good time there! However, having fun was not the only mission we had, as we also had to select our 2009/2010 exco. We had also to survive a few very unpredictable surprises which our seniors threw at us.

Our camp was supposed to start at 9am on 3 June because some JC1s were late, our seniors signalled their disappointment in our attitude and made all of us run two rounds around the track. Sigh, what a way to start camp…

Things got better however, and we had great fun bonding with one another through playing water games and icebreakers with our seniors. One of the games I found particularly meaningful was TrustFall.. we had to stand from a height and our teammates from the rifle or pistol team would link hands to form a bridge and catch us when we fall. It was no easy feat, even more so for those who are afraid of heights. The only thought running through my head when I finally found the courage to lean back was what was going to happen to me if my teammates let go the moment I land because I am too heavy. Thank goodness that didn’t happen, and I am very grateful that they caught me, or I probably wouldn’t be here writing about this.

The 12th Man: Money Matters

Today T12M won’t be boring you with reviews of the recently concluded Champions League Final, waxing lyrical about the passing and ball retention of a truly wondrous history-making Barcelona side in becoming the first Spanish outfit to win the treble, or the mega success story of Catalan hero Pep Guardiola in his debut top-flight managerial career, who has permanently etched his name in the footballing heavens of Barcelona. No, I will not be discussing the brilliance of Xavi or Messi or Iniesta, or telling you my thoughts of who is the best player in the world. Neither will I be trying to pin down a cause for the sudden collapse of Fergie’s ‘best squad ever’ in their biggest game of the season, or, for all my previous hyping of his midfield options, highlight how a serious deficiency was overlooked by myself and all the English media.

The Question of Rugby

By Sarah Wong and Kurobu

The sun was burning so brightly, illuminating the field where the battle was to begin. The numerous flies lurking in the grass were roused by the many feet that plodded about. The occasional shriek pierced the air, followed by the sound of hands frantically swatting the air as the flies, disturbed, decided to attack. The tension was so thick that only a deranged homicidal maniac armed with an industrial strength, diamond-edged chain saw could cut it. The relentless heat weighed down on the masses of ACJC and RIJC students congregating around the rugby field, who were undoubtedly blaming Global Warming. This would be the setting for the much vaunted rugby match.Of course, if you are reading this blog, it would stand to reason that you are an ACJC student, which would allow one to logically deduce that you attended the match. That in turn would mean that you would know everything that went on, and anything we report about the match wouldn’t exactly be news. Thus you would be glad to know this won’t be about the match but instead be about…

Dummies Guide 101: How To Play Rugby

By Lala and Soapy

With rugby in ACJC being such a big sport as shown on Friday, the people here at maniAC have decided to help those that don’t know a single thing about rugby, by giving them a Dummies Guide 101: How To Play Rugby…or know how it’s played, at the very least.

While some girls know that soccer could very well be a game where “20 men chase after a ball while two others try their best to keep it away from them”, ask them what rugby is all about, and you might possibly get a blank face. Never fail, maniAC will help the rugby player in you prevail!

For the uninitiated, a rugby ball looks nothing like a soccer ball, or tennis ball, or any other rounded ball. Instead, it is elongated, pretty much like an egg.

Rugby Rivalries

By Daphne and Obsession

The pride and joy of ACJC’s sporting teams has traditionally been its rugby boys. The acknowledged powerhouse has been feared by all for their tactical and technical superiority, adaptability, raw talent, discipline and above all, mental strength. But this reputation was not easy to obtain and neither has it been easy to maintain.
