A tale of two movies.

By DT.

So, Valentine’s Day sucked.

And before the questions start pouring in, I’m going to clarify: I’m talking about the movie, not the day. The day went well enough but the movie was a travesty. And I’d have to admit that it’s a pretty harsh statement to make for a movie that really wasn’t that bad…but that’s probably the only apt description that I have regarding the movie.

Pop Box: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

By DT

What makes a game great? Is it the memory of the moments where your jaw drops into your lap? (maniAC is not responsible for any facial dislocations) Is it a plot that leaves you regretting that you finally beat that last boss? Is it the choices that you’re allowed to make that shapes your character in ways that makes the game come alive? Perhaps it’s all of that…and maybe more. Continue Reading…

When CCA stops, you know that exams are very, very, Soon…

By Lala

Last Wednesday, the ACJC Harp Ensemble had its last CCA meeting of the year before the JC1 promotional exams. While most CCAs had already stopped, we had one more meeting, as we needed to catch up on lessons.

5 Things I Could Do With

by Lala

With teachers rushing to finish tutorials in time for our tests next week, PW WR due on Friday, this week has been a hectic week for me. Just when I think I want to give up, I can’t, because all the tests I’ve been preparing for (well, seemingly preparing for…with the amount of time I spend in school) are all next week! There’s Chemistry, Math, GP and biology. I could do with less homework, but here are five this of which I could do with more.

Facebook Games

By Obsession

Some moons ago, the reigning fad on Facebook was multiple quizzes Now,  it appears that many have moved on from these useless time fillers to a different, more efficient time waster, Facebook games. I haven’t personally tried most of them but I (dare) assume that apart from the fading glory of proving that you’ve beat a friend’s high score, these games do nothing for you.
How does playing FarmVille, make you a better person. Hmm… one does not become a better farmer though playing this game or do we?  Restaurant City appears to be a repetitive game as you are on the endless thankless task of obtaining “recipes” that wouldn’t work in the real world and “ingredients” that don’t physically exist. Games like Word Challenge aren’t fun; we only play it because we don’t want to have a lower ranking than our friends.
Please don’t waste what little free time you have at the end of the school day. Some things just are not worth it.

That is just my point of view. What is your cup of tea today?

Public Transport

By DL

Do you remember the first time you took a public bus on your own? I boarded the 173 bus on my own for the first time in Primary Six, while my brother was granted independence when he was in Primary Four. Why? My mum had her reasons which she made very clear to me: ‘You are so small, later the bus cannot see you and run you over, how?’

Boys vs Girls – The Battle of Words

by Christy

What this writer is talking about today is not arguments and squabbles, but rather the increasingly common phenomenon of people uttering vulgarities. This writer admits that a lot of people do spout vulgarities at the drop of a hat, but let me tell you, the frequency and intensity of such words used by guys is far worse than that of the girls. We utter the more common vulgarities occasionally (I shall not demonstrate here, it being against our school values) but shy away from the more insulting ones. Guys, however, go all out when it comes to doing such things. The result: our ears burn whenever we are within range of a guys-only conversation because all sorts of vulgarities are flying around with abandon.

I wish I were there

By – Obsession

It’s that time of year, when geeks from all over emerge from the musty darkness of their parents’ basement and gather together at the San Diego Convention Centre. To the uninitiated, the convention centre played host to a myriad of monsters and aliens last weekend, but we geeks can differentiate at a glance the trekies, whonatics, galatica fans, star wars fans and well, the fans of any kind of science fiction series there are.

Fast food losing popularity?

By Soapy

An interesting trend I have noticed recently is that most people our age do not really like to indulge in fast food. Whether it is MacDonald’s, KFC, Long John’s Silver, or even those fairly new joints like Carl’s Junior, these fast food joints seem to have lost (at least a bit) of their appeal. Whenever I’m out with my friends and we’re in a shopping centre and in the midst of all the restaurants/food courts/fast food joints, the first thing they will say is not to have any fast food. I’m not sure if you have noticed this trend too, or if you’re guilty of it yourself. Interestingly, food at the food courts seem to be gaining popularity.

Friends – a review

By – Obsession

I know that this show is long over, but it still seems like I hear about it everywhere I go. It’s still on television several times a day and I know a friend who is truly a Friends fanatic. There seems little point in summarising the plot. Unless you have been living under a rock all your life, you will know that Friends is about six friends living in New York as they make the all-important transition from fresh college graduates to responsible adults.

My Job Experience Stint

By Muhammad Alif

The teacher in charge of Job Experience Programme was surprised at my choice of workplace. My friend and I had sourced and managed to get two positions in Singtel. The job scope includes helping out with administrative work and managing data. While the description may sound mundane, my reason for choosing Singtel is because I want to experience working life in a large organisation.

Movie Maniac: A Civil Action

By Chong Joe En

Well, let’s just begin by saying that A Civil Action (1998), based on a book by Jonathan Harr, is a relatively old film, which is to say it was made last century. And films of that era are best judged by watching them personally. I will however introduce this movie briefly, while trying as much as possible not to spoil its effects on any potential viewers.

New food in the neighbourhood

By Soapy

Every year, people go crazy over a particular food fad. Last year, it was doughnuts. This year, it is…. well, you guessed right. Yogurt! Why yogurt, and not ice cream, you ask? Ice cream has been popular for many centuries and probably will be for many years to come. Yogurt used to be popular, too. Yami Yoghurt was one of the first brands of yoghurt to ’settle’ in Singapore, probably due to the Korean Wave. In the late 1980s, there was a craze over yoghurt but that eventually died out. In fact, I didn’t even notice any yoghurt outlets until the end of last year! Perhaps I have been living in a shell!

Forfeiting Football

The Twelfth Man

If I ever needed further reminders that the holidays are quickly ending and that the real crazy work is going to crash in, I got one when I woke up a few days ago. Despite verbally agreeing to it in the past, I nevertheless still received a rude shock when I discovered, much to my horror, that I couldn’t watch the replay of the Euro U-21 match. My sports channels had all been totally cut off; my weekly fix of watching football is over. And that means I’m going to miss the first half of the upcoming football season.
